What Is Hemp Oil?
There are three different types of hemp oil: hemp seed oil, CBD hemp oil, and hemp essential oil. Although they all come from the same plant, each type is extracted and processed in different ways and each has its own unique qualities. The cannabis plant can be used in a myriad of beneficial manners. Though it is not uncommon for individuals to use the terms hemp oil and hemp seed oil synonymously, it is important to note that hemp oil and hemp seed oil are very different. Understanding the differences between the various types of hemp oil is essential, as each is used in a different way.
Hemp Seed Oil
Hemp seed oil is derived from the seeds of the hemp plant. Hemp seed oil can come in two forms, unrefined or refined. These types are in direct relation to the way in which the oil was processed. Unrefined hemp seed oil has not been deodorized or bleached, as it undergoes processing with minimal heat. Most other unrefined oils (i.e. olive oil) are distinct due to their labeling, which often will include examples as extra virgin, virgin, raw…etc. The fact that unrefined hemp seed oil is less processed will reduce its longevity. For this reason, unrefined hemp seed oil must be stored in the refrigerator after it has been open, and the expiration date should be honored (as it has the propensity to go rancid at a faster rate than refined hemp seed oil).
Refined hemp seed oil is processed in a way that includes bleaching and deodorizing. It lasts longer than unrefined hemp seed oil and also lacks any significant flavor, color, and smell. When it is used, it is done so as an ingredient in various topical healthcare products (i.e. lotions, soaps, massage oils…etc.). It can also be found in certain plastics and fuel. Refined hemp oil is considerably less expensive than its unrefined counterpart.
CBD Hemp Oil
CBD is also known as Cannabidiol. CBD hemp oil is currently legal in twenty-nine states. Its legality is grouped into those locations where recreational and/ or medicinal marijuana is legal. As such, CBD hemp oil is used in the medical field to help with treating patients by relieving symptoms associated with epilepsy, seizures, and/ or cancer. There are a number of physical benefits that can be a result of CBD hemp oil. Some of beneficial reasons can include acting as an anticonvulsant, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antipsychotic agent. CBD hemp oil does not induce any intoxicating or psychoactive effects.
Though legal in certain states, and with a medicinal purpose, CBD hemp oil has yet to be approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in any form. This means that CBD hemp oil is not subject to federal regulation. Currently, the FDA is reviewing a new pharmaceutical-grade CBD medication that is to be used in the treatment of symptoms related to two childhood-onset epilepsy conditions, known as Lennox-Gastaut symdrom and Dravet syndrome. Furthermore, various animal studies have pointed to the numerous benefits of CBD as a treatment for the relief from chronic pain disorders, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, and more. The research in the United States with human subjects and the use of CBD hemp oil is limited, which is contributes negatively to the already difficult FDA approval process.
Hemp Essential Oil
Hemp essential oil is one of the most expensive essential oils in the world. The process to make hemp essential oil requires an abundance of the hemp plant. In order to make only one ounce of hemp essential oil, over fifty pounds of hemp flowers and upper leaves are needed. Hemp essential oil does not contain any amount of CBD or THC. Hemp essential oil is legal in the United States.
Individuals use hemp essential oil for its therapeutic abilities that can benefit the central nervous system. Diffusing hemp essential oil can help increase relaxation while also helping to reduce and release stress in one’s body. Though it is extremely expensive and can be difficult to find in America, some companies are beginning to use hemp essential oil in candles, massage oils, lotions and other wellness methods to promote its healing effects.
The three different types of hemp oil carry with them a myriad of benefits and can be incredibly useful when used in alignment with their respective properties. Some of the noted benefits of and uses for hemp seed oil are its ability to help to balance hormones, lower the risk of heart disease, relieve pain associated with arthritis, act as an anti-inflammatory, and help to moisturize the body. Surely, in time, America will become increasingly more tolerant and accepting of the use of hemp oil, in all of its forms.
