What is Hemp Isolate?

What is Hemp Isolate?

The cannabis plant contains an amazing collection of naturally occurring organic ingredients. The hemp species of the plant doesn’t contain THC, the compound associated with marijuana, but it does contain numerous other compounds in its oil called cannabinoids. The most famous of these cannabinoids is CBD, an abbreviation for cannabidiol.

Sometimes producers of hemp and CBD products want a specific cannabinoid from the cannabis plant, to put inside a product. Isolating a specific compound, removing other ingredients, and purifying it into a concentrated form is called Hemp Isolate. Hemp isolate is a purified extract that contains only a single cannabinoid. In other words, a hemp isolate is an extraction process that “isolates” a particular cannabinoid and removes all of the remaining compounds found in the hemp plant, thus making the extract 98%-100% pure.

A purified hemp isolate concentrates the beneficial, active ingredients of the specific cannabinoid. When the isolate is added to a product, its potency is enhanced. For example, a hemp skincare producer would want to add specific skin-rejuvenating cannabinoids to their skin cream, so they would likely use a hemp oil base for the cream, and add a hemp isolate to create a cream that specifically moisturizes and rejuvenates the skin. This is why there are so many different hemp and CBD products for every body part and wellness application – there are as many different hemp isolates as there are cannabinoids, the ingredient found in the hemp plant.

How is Hemp Isolate made?

There are many different ways to isolate and purified cannabinoids. The process starts with raw cannabis plant matter, usually the seeds, but sometimes the whole plant including the leaves stems and stalks. An extraction system uses carbon dioxide as a solvent to extract purified oil in the same way plant-based oils like coconut, peanut, and vegetable oils are made. The solvent is considered a cleaner, and more pure form of extraction because it leaves no residue behind.

After extraction, the oil or compounds need to be distilled and refined to remove impurities and undesirable ingredients. Both distillation and refining are further processes that remove undesirable elements like fats, waxes, lipids, and impurities. Once the oil has been filtered, refined, and distilled, what’s leftover is an isolated, purified extract that can be added into various products. Hemp isolates often take the form of a fine powder or white crystal that can be easily blended and dissolved into a multitude of hemp-based wellness products like sublingual tinctures, skin creams, topical creams, lotions, shampoos and more.

What is Hemp Isolate used for?

Once an isolated hemp extract is produced, it’s ready to be used in a variety of products. The isolate is mixed with other ingredients into an isolate added to a carrier or suspension like oil, cream, or tonic, depending on how it is to be used. The hemp isolates get mixed into any number of wellness products. Hemp Isolates mixed into cream are topically applied to the skin in the form of lotions, creams, and balms. Hygiene and cleansing products like soap, shampoo, and conditioners, and even pet products can utilize hemp isolate. CBD isolates that are taken orally are put into a pleasant-tasting tincture to be taken sublingually (under the tongue) that evaporates without leaving residue.

Hemp isolates can be mixed into essentially any product used on the body or taken orally. The isolates allow the specific benefits of cannabinoids to be isolated and concentrating, provide potent benefits, and for whatever the hemp user could want. Hemp isolates form the key active ingredients for the most popular hemp products, including CBD sublingual, topical creams, and countless skin and beauty products.

What is the difference between hemp isolate, hemp extract, and hemp seed oil?

Hemp isolates confine and isolate the one specific pure compound or cannabinoid within the hemp plant. Isolates are not ready-made substances – they only exist after an extensive process to isolate them into pure forms. Hemp isolate is made through an extraction and refinery process where all undesired elements are removed, and each compound becomes isolated and pure. Hemp extract is purified, but does not isolate for specific ingredients, and contains all of the available cannabinoids contained within the hemp plant. Likewise, Hemp seed oil is not isolated either. Its oil extracted from just the seeds of the hemp plant, and it contains many ingredients.

Usually, when hemp products are prepared from the raw plant, they use the hemp strain of the cannabis Sativa plant, which contains little to no THC, and the processes to turn the hemp plant into hemp oil or hemp isolate removes all traces of THC. However, some cannabis products intentionally use the marijuana strain of cannabis and purposely include the THC and do not remove it. These are labeled and marketed as “Full-Spectrum” products and extracts, meaning you get the full assortment of possible cannabinoids, including THC. In Full Spectrum products, the THC isn’t as concentrated as it is in marijuana, but there is enough to produce psychoactive effects, and the presence THC may be indicated on drug tests after the use of Full Spectrum supplements.

What is the difference between hemp isolate and CBD?

Hemp isolate is the purest form of hemp, pulled from the hemp plant, and distilled until it is devoid of all other compounds, leaving it essentially 100% pure. CBD oil is processed to ensure the presence of Cannabidiol, one cannabinoid, but there are many other cannabinoids and other naturally occurring ingredients present. CBD oil contains all the natural chemicals found in the whole plant, which include various other cannabinoids, essential oils, and terpenes. There are over 100 different cannabinoids found in the hemp plant that interact with your body by targeting specific receptors.

So can Cannabidiol (CBD) be isolated into a pure isolate? Yes, CBD is one of many cannabinoids that producers of hemp produce purposely isolate and add to products. The benefits of CBD are enhanced when it is isolated, and it’s frequently the active ingredient in many CBD products. One of the most popular CBD products, sublingual oils, use CBD isolate to magnify the potency of the CBD oil.

Hemp CBD isolates should not be considered treatments for specific diseases or conditions, and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration has not approved CBD for therapeutic use, but that does not mean they are unsafe or illegal to use.

Is Hemp Isolate safe to use?

The absence of THC makes hemp isolate non-psychoactive and safe for all ages to use. The FDA is currently reviewing CBD and has not approved it for therapeutic use, so it falls into the category of nutritional supplements – substances that are not classified as medications or treatments for any condition.

Legal hemp products sold in the U.S. must come from the hemp plant and contain less than 0.3% THC. Since hemp isolate does not contain any THC, there are no legal consequences from purchasing it and no medical card or license is needed to buy it.  Products made from hemp isolate are 100% legal to buy and use, and widely available at stores and online retailers.

Like all products made from the hemp species of the cannabis plant, hemp isolates contain no THC. You can use any product made from hemp isolates safely and legally without accidentally or unknowingly taking THC, but remember products marketed as “Full Spectrum” do contain THC.

What products contain Hemp Isolate?

Countless hemp-based products contain hemp isolate, as well as many CBD products. It is likely that any category of hemp-based product you purchase contains some sort of hemp isolate to focus and enhance its benefits.

Hemp isolate is legal to use and can be found in a variety of oils, edibles, topicals, and other hemp products across the United States. Hemp isolate can be taken orally, through sublingual oils, or blended with oil and added to creams, lotions, and balms, for a variety of other topical uses. Because hemp isolate has no taste or aroma, it is often used to add benefits to beverages, snacks, and sweeteners, like smoothies, baked goods, and coffee.

Why should I use Hemp Isolate?

The uses of hemp isolates are as varied and different as people’s wellness needs. Products made from hemp isolates span across the wellness industry, but it’s important to remember that you never use a hemp isolate in its purified form – you use one of the many hemp or CBD products that contain isolate as an active ingredient.

So the real question is, what CBD or hemp-based product is right for you? If you want workout recovery, try a CBD topical cream. If you want premium moisturizing and skincare, try some of the countless hemp beauty products. If you are interested in nighttime relaxation, try a hemp-extract sublingual.

Ultimately Hemp Isolate isn’t a product in itself, it’s a key ingredient in a process that creates a whole family of health and wellness products.
