Hemp vs. CBD: What’s the difference?

If you look at the huge family of Cannabis-derived products available for personal use, there are essentially three categories grouped according to the presence or absence of specific chemical compounds:  Hemp, CBD, and those that contain THC.

THC is the chemical compound that produces the psychoactive, euphoric “high” historically associated with Cannabis. Cannabis products that contain THC are controlled substances tightly regulated by state laws. That leaves Hemp and CBD as the remaining classes of therapeutic products derived from the Cannabis plant that people can purchase and use. The THC has been removed in both Hemp and CBD products, and they are 100% legal to purchase in the US.

Hemp Oil – the basis of all Hemp and CBD Products

Hemp vs CBD what's the difference? Organic Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp Seed Oil is the botanical oil extracted from the cannabis plant. It is the primary ingredient in both Hemp and CBD products. Pure organic hemp seed oil is approved by the FDA for over-the-counter use and contains a unique mixture of natural plant-based compounds that combine to produce multiple therapeutic and medicinal benefits.

What’s the benefit of Hemp Seed Oil?

Hemp seed oil is full of beneficial ingredients like natural moisturizers, pain-relievers, antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and amino acids. These ingredients fall into a class of botanical compounds called cannabinoids that work together to produce multiple therapeutic effects on the human body. However, in Hemp Seed oil one specific cannabinoid is not present – Cannabidiol, also called CBD.

What makes CBD different?

Essentially the only difference between Hemp and CBD products of the same type is the presence of the single cannabinoid that gives CBD products their namesake, Cannabidiol. Hemp and CBD products are chemically nearly identical, the only difference is with Hemp products the Cannabidiol compound has been isolated and removed.

Are CBD products more potent?

The short answer is, we can’t say. Hemp products have been approved by the FDA for therapeutic use while CBD products have not. This is the reason retailers are hesitant to talk about the benefits of CBD. The FDA does not allow medical or therapeutic claims to be made about supplements they have not approved for over-the-counter use – nonetheless CBD products are 100% completely legal and millions of people are using them.

Users of CBD say it has extra potency above Hemp and its effects are more pronounced, but at this time CBD is not approved by the FDA, and we do not make any claims to its benefits. If you want to know more, you’ll have to ask someone who uses CBD, or better yet – try it for yourself. After all, it’s 100% legal to buy, use and enjoy.
